Translation

Prior to my teaching career, I used to be a translator for West Yorkshire Police,  providing written and spoken translation services during court proceedings and also assisting police officers with investigations and interrogations.

I continue to provide occasional written and verbal translation services, notably for legal firms and solicitors requiring translation of legal documents and county court representation for both defence and prosecution.

Even in an age of automatic translation services like Google Translate, the quality, nuance and sophistication of translation by a professional provides much better quality and cultural understanding.

I charge on an hourly basis for translation services, whether written or verbal. I can provide  translations as…

  • Printed or electronic documents.
  • An in-person real-time translator (plus the cost and time required for travel)
  • Spoken word recordings in digital form.

Students

I began teaching in 1982 and in those 34 years time I have taught around 200 A-level students and approximately 1500 GCSE students, helping them all towards outstanding results.

My A-level students in particular have always attained grade A in their speaking exams. Many of my A-levels students sit their exams as early as Year 10.

Many of my students have gone on careers in areas as diverse as law, medicine, teaching, physics, pharmacy, radiography, business, aeronautical engineering, physiotherapy and sport and exercise. All gained valuable UCAS points for their university applications. Some of those wonderful success stories include…

  • Alia Ansar – went on to study pharmacy; her A-level Urdu studies gave her additional UCAS points so she could gain admission into university.
  • Faisal Jabbar Chaudary went on to become an optician.
  • Asma Siddique studied law at the University Of Bradford.
  • Maheen Khan from Bradford Academy went on to become a pharmacist.
  • Zakki Sarfaraz from Dixons City Academy studied Sports Science at Leeds Beckett.
  • Sohaib Qaiser from Bradford Academy, took after-school GCSE Urdu classes and went on to study optometry.
  • Sabah Aruje went on to study Physiotherapy at the University of Leeds, with an A-level in Urdu.

Though my teaching career has been largely focussed on the Urdu language, I am also a trained scientist with both Bachelors and Masters degrees in Zoology & Botany.

Why Urdu?

Urdu example.svg

There are many great reasons to learn Urdu…

  • Urdu is one of the most widely spoken and understood languages in the world, with around 65m speakers and 52m in India alone.
  • Here in Britain, around 400,000 people speak and understand Urdu, making it a vital language for police, health workers, legal professionals, social workers and many other professions.
  • If you can speak Urdu, you can also communicate with Hindustani speakers (the fourth most common language in the world) and Punjabi speakers.
  • Students who go on to study Urdu at A-level, can gain additional UCAS points which count towards their university applications.
  • Urdu is so widespread, even the BBC and Google offer Urdu editions of their services.
  • Many English words are commonly used in spoken and written Urdu for example “science” (سائنس).
  • Urdu has also contributed a few words to English, including chutney (چٹنی).

About Me

Hello.
I am a retired high school teacher with more than three decades experience of teaching GCSE and A-Level students in the Bradford area.

Following retirement, I have spent the last few years teaching part-time at various schools and colleges across the Bradford district. Specifically, if students and pupils need to study A-level Urdu for additional UCAS points or wish to study GCSE Urdu after school or in timetabled lessons, I am available to teach these subjects and prepare lessons at the highest level.
